Magical play is exciting for kids, and like all play, it’s how young children learn best. When mixing and making up a magical potion a child is also learning to problem solve, think creativity, and getting all kinds of great sensory input.
Fairy Potions is one of my own children’s favorite type of play! We built a toadstool table this summer to add to our outdoor mud kitchen. My fairy potions kit is one of the best sellers at farmers markets and events, and it’s no question why: potion making is fun for everyone!
Find out some of our favorite ways to play with potions.
Here are some fun elements to add to your potion play:
Water!
Water is ALWAYS fun in potion play. Mix it up, by adding color to your water with liquid paint or food coloring.
Eco-friendly Glitter
We love glitter, but it can get everywhere and it’s not great for the environment. Make your own eco-friendly glitter by simply adding coloring to salt! Some favorite salts for glitter are:
Rock salt (Ice Cream Salt)
Epson salt
Table/sea salt
Just add salt and a little coloring to a bag, shake it up, and you have homemade glitter!
Fizzing Potions
Vinegar and baking soda make a fun fizzing reaction. My new favorite fizzing combination is equal parts citric aid and baking soda. All this needs to get bubbling is water!
