Salt Dough Ornaments
Benefits: Creativity, Focus, visual motor skills, and fine motor skills.
Materials: Homemade Salt Dough, Rolling Pin, Cookie Cutters, pencil, and twine.
Prep: Make the Salt Dough:
4 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
1-1.5 cups of salt
In a mixing bowl combine the flour, salt, and 1 cup of water. Mix with a stand or hand mixer for a few minutes. Add an additional 1/2 cup of water, if needed, to create a smooth dough consistency. Hand kneed the dough into ball shapes for easier creating.
Activity: Together, child and grownup, can use a rolling pin or hands to flatted out the dough to 1/4 - 1/2 inch thickness. Then, use cookie cutters to shape the dough. With a toothpick or end of a pencil add a small hole to the top/center of the shape (for stringing twine through later).
These salt dough ornaments will harden on there own over time, but to speed up the process you can bake on parchment paper at a low temperature (around 250°F) for 1-3 hours until hard. Thicker pieces take longer. Cool completely before adding twine.
After your ornaments are completely cooled, add color with paint or markers. Finally, add twine through the hole to hang and enjoy!
