Nature Treasure Collecting

There’s something so sweet about the way toddlers collect things. A short walk can turn into a giant adventure for them as they find a smooth stone or a pinecone. Next, they might find a feather, a little stick, or a handful of leaves. To grown-ups, they may look like simple objects but to a toddler, each one is a special treasure.

At Sunshine Sprouts, we lean into the wonder of curiosity. Collecting is one of those simple childhood joys that invites little ones to slow down, notice their surroundings, and bring a bit of the outdoors home. And once you have a growing collection of nature treasures, it’s fun to give those discoveries a special place to live.

Egg Carton Collections

An empty egg carton makes a wonderful little nature organizer. Let your child sort their treasures into each compartment. Rocks in one, acorns in another, and leaves in the next. It’s an easy way to practice sorting while creating a sweet little nature collection.

Metal Bucket Finds

A bucket is such a fun tool to keep nature finds in. The buckets we use at class have become a staple each season, and have lasted in near perfect condition for 5 years now! I always get asked about where to find these, and this bucket (bucket link here) is very similar to the ones we use in class!

Canvas Tote Adventures

A canvas tote is perfect for nature walks. Give each child their own bag and let them gather treasures as they explore. Add a simple name tag or decorate the tote together to make it feel extra special.

A Personalized Treasure Box

For the treasures that feel truly special, a personalized nature box is perfect. A small wooden or cardboard box can be painted, covered with stickers, or decorated with your child’s name. Inside, they can keep their favorite rocks, shells, feathers, dried leaves, and other tiny reminders of adventures outside. I hand make personalized nature boxes (get yours here).

The best part isn’t really the collection, yet it’s the memories attached to it. A pocketful of pebbles can become a reminder of a rainy walk, a pinecone can bring back the feeling you all had on a family hike, and a tiny feather can spark a whole conversation about birds.

So the next time your little one stops to pick up just one more rock, let them. Those little treasures are a wonderful way to nurture curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of the natural world.
