Why Kids Should Love Bugs

The Benefits of Bugs

There’s something magical about the way children see bugs. They get SO excited to find a worm in the dirt or a bee on a flower.

As adults, we might not always share that enthusiasm, especially when a child proudly shows us a bug by handing it to us. But a child’s fascination with bugs is actually something worth encouraging.

Bug hunting is more than just a fun outdoor activity. It’s an opportunity for children to explore, wonder, observe, and develop a deeper connection with nature.

Bugs Encourage Curiosity

Children are naturally curious. Bugs give them many new opportunities to ask questions:

  • What is that?

  • Where is it going?

  • Can it fly?

  • What happens if I follow it?

There is no shortage of curiosity when looking closely at the world beneath our feet.

Bugs Help Children Connect With Nature

When children regularly spend time looking for bugs, they begin to notice the small details of their surroundings. They learn that nature isn't just something to visit, rather it’s something they are a part of.

That growing sense of connection can help children develop an appreciation and respect for all living things around them.

Bug Hunting Builds Focus

When a child searches for bugs they slow down and notice things that a grownup might completely miss. I’m always in blown away by the things my own kids and all the explorers in class notice!

These little moments spent observing build foundational science skills and help with lifelong focus skills. And, focus just happens to be one to the 8 skills we work on in class!

Bugs Can Help Children Develop Empathy

These Tiny Friends are small, but they are living creatures with their own needs.

When children learn to gently observe a caterpillar, avoid stepping on an ant, or to return a beetle to it’s home, they're beginning to think about another living thing's experience.

These experiences help children practice gentleness, care, and respect for all living things.

Ready to Go Bug Hunting?

You don't need a backyard full of insects to get started. Pick a beautiful day, head outside, and see what you can find!

Try looking: Under something, around trees, near flowers or water, in sunny patches and in the shade.

Remember that bug hunting doesn't have to mean catching anything. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when we simply watch and wonder.

Make Your Own Bug Adventure

I've created a few resources to help make bug exploration even more fun:

🔎 Nature Scavenger Hunt Printable: Take this free scavenger hunt along on your next outdoor adventure! This was originally listed on my etsy shop, but offered for free here.

🦋 Butterfly Wings: These are the same wings we use in class!

🐞 Bug Sensory Bin: A hands-on way to explore bugs through sensory and pretend play, perfect for children who can't get enough of bugs!

Let Them Love the Bugs

If your child is fascinated by bugs, embrace it! Let them stop to watch an ant trail or ask a hundred questions about a caterpillar. Encouraging this curiosity is about more than just bugs.

We're helping them become careful observers, curious explorers, compassionate humans, and lifelong lovers of nature!
